Historic Yuma building damaged in Mexicali quake

Yuma's Gandolfo Annex building was damaged during the earthquake series that began with a 5.4 magnitude quake south of Mexicali last week and continued with hundreds of smaller aftershocks.

The building is on the National Register of Historic Places. It was built in 1905 and originally used by local businessman John Gandolfo as an office and hotel annex. It is constructed of unreinforced masonry which is particularly vulnerable to seismic activity.

The building has been vacant while plans were being developed to restore the building. [photos, Yuma Fire Dept]
